Why it works: Chapter 13, Why stretching your hamstrings will not loosen them

How to do it

  1. 1

    Start in a plank

Hands on the floor a little way from the wall, feet against the bottom of the wall behind you.

  2. 2

    Walk up

Walk your feet up the wall and your hands in towards it, one small step at a time. Stop wherever you still feel in control.

  3. 3

    Chest to the wall

Aim for your hands a short way from the wall and your body straight, chest facing it. Ribs down, bottom tight.

  4. 4

    Lock and push

Arms locked, push the floor away. Hold for 20 seconds, breathing.

  5. 5

Come down the way you went up

Walk your hands out and your feet down, slowly. Never kick off the wall.

  6. 6

    The test

Your arms stay locked and your body stays straight for the whole hold. When you sag or your arms bend, walk down.

Watch for

  • Arching your back. Ribs down and squeeze your bottom.
  • Bent arms. Lock them.
  • Rushing the way down. Walk down as slowly as you walked up.

Questions

Why face the wall instead of kicking up with my back to it?

Facing the wall, you walk up and down under control and your body stays straight. Kicking up with your back to the wall is a skill of its own, and the hold is the point here.

Do I need to do a free handstand?

No. The hold against the wall is the strength. Balance away from the wall is a different skill.
