Why it works: Chapter 13, Why stretching your hamstrings will not loosen them

How to do it

  1. 1

    Set up on your back

Roll onto your side, take the handle with both hands, hug it to your chest and roll onto your back. Press it up with both hands, then let go with the free hand. Never press it one-handed off the floor cold.

  2. 2

    Bend the same knee

Bend the knee on the bell side, foot flat. The other leg lies straight, out at an angle. Free arm out on the floor.

  3. 3

    Punch up to your forearm

Drive off your bent leg and punch the bell to the ceiling as you come up onto your free forearm. It is a punch, not a sit-up. Eyes on the bell; arm stays locked.

  4. 4

    Up to your hand

Push from your elbow up onto your hand, sitting tall, shoulder pulled down. Bell still straight over your shoulder.

  5. 5

    Back down the same way

Hand to elbow, elbow to floor, slowly. Bring the bell to your chest with both hands and roll to set it down.

  6. 6

    The test

The bell stays straight above your shoulder and your eyes stay on it. When the arm wobbles, stop.

Watch for

  • Bending the bell arm. It stays locked from start to finish.
  • Looking away from the bell.
  • Rushing the way down. It is half the rep.
