The story
Legend says a highwayman robbed a traveller at Gad's Hill in Kent early one morning in 1676. He then rode about 200 miles to York by sunset, to give himself an alibi. Defoe told it, and later writers gave it to Dick Turpin. Source: Defoe, A Tour Thro' the Whole Island of Great Britain.
