The story
In 1943 PT-109 was sunk. Its crew swam 3.5 miles to an island, and the skipper, John F. Kennedy, towed a burned man by a strap in his teeth. Two Solomon Islander scouts, Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana, found them. Source: US National Archives.
